Known as the biggest shopping event of the year, the holiday season consistently brings in tremendous foot traffic and sales. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/nrf-says-census-data-shows-2023-holiday-sales-grew-38-record-9644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NRF<\/a>, retail sales during the holiday season grew 3.8% to a record $964.4 billion. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last 10+ years, we have seen holiday sales growth year-over-year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, your business is up for a busy shopping season ahead. And while it\u2019s a must that you prep your store for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the days leading up to Christmas, it\u2019s equally important to think about what you\u2019ll do with all your new customers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the holidays are over. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t let all that added foot traffic and sales be a holiday-only occurrence. Craft a marketing and customer retention plan that allows you to keep shoppers coming back even after the gift-giving days are over. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on for some ideas on how to do just that.<br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get customers to join your email list or loyalty program<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to get people to come back is to stay top of mind through regular communication. And you can\u2019t do that if you don\u2019t have your customers\u2019 contact details to begin with. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the coming weeks (and beyond), make it a bigger priority to capture people\u2019s email address or phone number. The finer details of this process depend on your store, but here are some pointers:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Collect just one piece of information<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; You want to make it quick and easy for customers to hand over their details, so avoid asking for too much. This practice will just lengthen the checkout process and give shoppers a reason to pass. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, let the customer dictate the information to your staff. For example, at the cosmetics chain Ulta, cashiers ask for the customer\u2019s phone number at checkout. When the customer provides the information, they\u2019re automatically enrolled in the retailer\u2019s loyalty program. No muss, no fuss.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you must ask customers to enter their information themselves, do it electronically. Have them enter their phone number or email using a tablet or keypad on the counter. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Provide an incentive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Give people a reason to hand over their information. Find an incentive that you can offer in exchange for their contact details. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levi\u2019s, for example, offers 20% off towards a future purchase if you enroll in their loyalty program. Like Ulta, Levi\u2019s makes info-gathering easy for both the staff and the customer. When a cashier is handling a sale, they deliver a quick statement along the lines of\u2026 \u201cDo you want to enroll in our loyalty program for 20% off?\u201d. When the shopper says yes, they simply dictate their email address and are good to go. Give your staff the time to practice so they can refine their approach before the holiday crowds descend. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Invest in gift cards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kgraff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kevin Graff<\/a> said it best<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gift cards are God\u2019s gift to retail.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is particularly true during the holiday season because gift cards are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media\/press-releases\/almost-half-of-younger-consumers-plan-spend-more-during-the-holidays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">second most popular gift option<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for shoppers (the first is apparel).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gift cards can be very effective in driving new and repeat business. Think about it: if you receive a gift card for Christmas, chances are high that you would visit that store or website to take advantage. There are plenty of vendors in the market who sell pre-designed and custom gift cards, so shop around and see what you can find. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you have the cards, display them prominently in your location. In addition to the checkout counter, set up gift card displays in other high-traffic areas of your shop. Also, consider your products that are commonly given as presents, and then see if you can display gift cards near those items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Sidenote: Conduct a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bindy.com\/conduct-a-merchandising-audit-in-ten-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">merchandising audit<\/a> to ensure that your displays are implemented correctly.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about online marketing. Share a few social media posts and compose some emails to let people know where and how to purchase your gift cards. Product inserts can be very helpful in introducing your brand to customers and encouraging them to check out your merchandise. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lego is a master at this tactic. The company often includes cross-selling flyers in its current Lego sets to encourage people to buy their other products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re not keen on including a product flyer or catalog, consider adding a nice note, instead. And if you want to get people to come back, you need to do it with a smile. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returns (in brick and mortar) have a big upside: they bring people into your store. As Forbes contributor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/micahsolomon\/2013\/12\/01\/in-which-i-reveal-a-retail-experts-way-of-handling-customer-returns-in-just-one-single-word\/#7f3a037662f9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Micah Solomon points out<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In retail, we take it as a given that returns are bad for the bottom line.
