Revenue numbers alone cannot tell the whole story without context or historical data, so it\u2019s important to look at how a store\u2019s revenue is tracking over a given timeframe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where same-store sales come in. This metric, which is also referred to as &#8220;comparable store sales\u201d measures the increase or decrease in revenue of a retailer&#8217;s stores for a particular accounting period. It&#8217;s typically expressed as a percentage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSame-store sales\u201d is an important metric to track, as it gives you an idea of how your stores are performing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also goes without saying that retailers should always strive to improve same-store sales. Increasing your revenue (along with maintaining a healthy profit margin, of course) will lead to a thriving and growing retail business.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Run promotions\u2026 but be smart about them!<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running a sale or promotion is often the go-to tactic for retailers who want to increase sales \u2014 and for good reason. They can be incredibly effective in attracting and converting shoppers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, promotions can do more harm than good when they\u2019re not implemented with the right strategy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoorly run promotions can be very expensive,\u201d comments Thom Iddon at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.formulate.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Formulate<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to him, \u201cdiscounts on one product might severely undercut sales of another product.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also an issue of stockpiling, when customers buy several units of an item while on sale, and don\u2019t buy for the next several months.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why you need to be smart about your promotions, and only run sales <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you have a plan for how to get shoppers to buy more and protect your profit margins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, if you\u2019re selling something at a loss or with razor-thin margins, you need to have a strategy for how you\u2019re going to drive profits and sales. Many retailers use loss-leaders to attract customers in hopes that they would buy more profitable items when they\u2019re at the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take bread, for example. As Iddon points out, it\u2019s \u201ca relatively cheap product to discount, [but] can boost sales of cheese, where margins are much higher for a supermarket.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The bottom line: promotions can do wonders for your sales, but be careful with how you implement them. Before putting up a huge SALE sign by your window, craft a plan to convert customers on higher-margin products when they\u2019re at the store, or at the very least, figure out how you can drive sales from these customers in the future.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Collect customer information and put their data to good use<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generating future sales from existing customers can only be done if you have the right shopper data. To that end, make it a point to collect people\u2019s information when they\u2019re in your store.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to do this is through the use of a rewards program. Incentivize your shoppers to sign up for your loyalty platform so you can capture their contact details, along with their purchase history.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the denim company Levi\u2019s. The cashiers at most of its locations are trained to ask customers if they\u2019d like to give their email address and sign up for Levi\u2019s loyalty program. Then once you have your customers\u2019 information, make an effort to stay on their radar by keeping them posted on new products, company updates, and promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bonus points if you send them messages that are relevant to their browsing history or previous purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levi\u2019s, once again, excels at this. Invest in your team<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite best efforts, some stores perform better than others,\u201d points out Carol Leaman, CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/axonify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Axonify<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to her, to improve a store\u2019s performance, retailers should \u201clook no further than the frontline workforce.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour associates are critical to your operational success. They\u2019re your shrink stoppers. Your ADT (average dollar transaction) aces. Your process management masters. And your customer experience curators,\u201d Leaman adds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She recommends investing in training programs specifically for frontline staff. &#8220;It\u2019s time for training and communication that meet your retail associates where they are,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u201cThere are <a href=\"https:\/\/bindy.com\/products\/collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technology platforms<\/a> that can help. Find ways to drive foot traffic<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo boost sales in brick-and-mortar stores, you also need to boost footfall and get people through the door,\u201d comments Polly Kay, Senior Marketing Manager at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishblinds.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English Blinds<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to her, many retailers miss out on <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bindy.com\/5-ways-retailers-can-increase-foot-traffic-in-their-stores\/\" data-type=\"6462\">foot traffic opportunities<\/a> because they\u2019re too focused on incentivizing offers in-store. \u201cIt is much easier to upsell or increase checkout values for shoppers who have already made it through the door than it is to bring in additional revenue from scratch, but if you don&#8217;t receive enough customers to support growth in the first place, this is not enough,\u201d Kay adds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her advice?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.bindy.com\/store-operations-checklist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Assess your store\u2019s environment<\/a> and make sure it encourages pedestrians and would-be shoppers to actually walk through your doors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kay recommends asking questions like:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is parking available and obvious to would-be shoppers?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you easy to find?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there anything unpleasant or off-putting about your locale, such as a lot of garbage in the streets or poor lighting that you need to take up with the local authorities?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your store clearly signed, and evident for what it is, with sufficient lighting, attractive displays, and clear incentives to come in?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese and many other points all need to be considered to ensure you&#8217;re not losing out on trade that might otherwise reach you organically,\u201d Kay adds.<\/span> Doing so will help you increase same-store sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Maximize sales from existing visitors<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve gotten people through your doors, strive to maximize the sales you gain from each customer. Two common tactics for accomplishing this are upselling and cross-selling.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upselling is the process of selling a higher tier or version of a product while cross-selling is all about recommending relevant or complementary items.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both these tactics can be highly effective, but only when executed with care.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Roberta Perry of <a href=\"https:\/\/scrubzbody.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ScrubsBody<\/a> puts it, \u201ca gentle up-sell is not only good for my business, but it&#8217;s good for my customers as well. If it is done with truth and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Let\u2019s say] a person with super dry skin comes in and asks for help. The first and best item would be our scrub, which not only moisturizes, but polishes and cleans skin. I always recommend the scrub first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe up-sell is our Shea butter lotion, which we recommend on non-scrub days, or at night if you shower in the morning. <\/span>It will absolutely help the customer even more than with the scrub alone and we know this. It will also cost them more money.
